Yürürken kitap okunur mu?

Yürürken kitap okunduğunu ilk kez çok sevdiğim Disney filmi Güzel ve Çirkin'de görmüştüm küçükken. O zamandan beri ben de denedim ama sadece evin içinde. Mutfağa, tuvalete, başka odaya girmem gerekiyorsa kitap elimde, okumayı bölmeden yürüyorum. TIME dergisinin Entertainment yazarlarından Lev Grossman da bu konuya değinmiş. Makaleye buradan erişebilirsiniz. Sokakta yürürken kitap okumakla ilgili ipuçları vermiş. O New York gibi bir şehirde becermişse biz de İstanbul'da becerebiliriz bence!

The first time I saw reading and walking at the same time was possible was in my favorite Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast. I've tried it since then, but only inside the house. Whenever I have to go to the kitchen or the bathroom or another room in my apartment, I just keep on reading as I walk around. TIME magazine's Entertainment section touches upon this issue in an article written by Lev Grossman. You can read the article here. There are tips on reading and walking on the street. If they can do it in a city like New York, we should definitely be able to do it as well in Istanbul.

John Banville'den 'Ancient Light' - John Banville's 'Ancient Light'

Ex Libris kitap kulübü olarak Ocak ayında Banville'in Man Booker ödüllü 'Deniz' isimli kitabını okuduk. İlk başlarda kelimenin tam anlamıyla 'kanırttı' kitap ama sonuçta çok sevdim. Ancient Light'ın (Eski/Antika Işık) konusu da çok farklı gözükmüyor ancak çok merak ettim ve Kindle formatını bulur bulmaz okuyacağım sanırım.

İyi günlerinin geçmişte kaldığını düşünen aktör Alexander Cleave, 1950'lerde İrlanda'nın küçük bir kasabasında genç bir oğlankenki kuşkulu ilişkisini hatırlar: kasaba dışındaki kırık dökük kulübedeki kaçamak buluşmalar, güneşli sabahlar ve yağmurlu öğlenlerde aşığının arabasının arka koltuğunda gizli buluşmalar. Bu hatıralarla birlikte daha keskin ve daha karanlık bir şeyler de gelir-- aktörün kızının 10 yıl önceki intiharına dair anılar.

Deniz'in ana karakteri Max Madden da karısının ölümünün ardından çocukluk anılarını hatırlıyordu ve Max de bütün yaz birlikte vakit geçirdiği arkadaşları Chloe ve Myles'ın annesine aşıktı. Bakalım artık, okuyunca daha iyi görünecek benzerlik ve farklılıklar.

John Banville's Man Booker winner The Sea was our January read as Ex Libris book club. At first, I thought it was impossible to get through the book, but I loved it in the end. Ancient Light's subject matter doesn't seem too different from The Sea, but I'm intrigued nevertheless. I believe as soon as I get my hands on the Kindle version, I'll read it.

Alexander Cleave, an actor who thinks his best days are behind him, remembers his first unlikely affair as a teenage boy in a small town in 1950s Ireland: the illicit meetings in a rundown cottage outside town; assignations in the back of his lover's car on sunny mornings and rain-soaked afternoons. And with these early memories comes something sharper and much darker - the more recent recollection of the actor's own daughter's suicide ten years before.
Ancient Light is the story of a life rendered brilliantly vivid: the obsession and selfishness of young love and the terrifying shock of grief. It is a dazzling novel, funny, utterly pleasurable and devastatingly moving in the same moment.

The Sea's main character Max Madden was remembering his childhood memories after the death of his wife. He too was in love Chloe and Myles Grace's mothers, the kids he spent an entire summer playing with. These are the similarities between the two books I can see off the top of my head, and I believe both the similarities and the differences will be more obvious when I do get around to reading it.

Being the last one of the year 2011's review, I guess this post also shows that I've gotten lazy toward the end of the year with my reviews. Oh, well... From this pile, Etgar Keret was among my favorites this year. Thanks to my lovely sister for telling me to check him out because he was a great discovery. And then, The Road... Oh, The Road! It was a book that made me think about a lot of things and screwed with my emotions. Wonderful piece of literature, and I suggest everyone read it. Being There and The Comfort of Strangers were other surprises of the year, and among my favorites. The Comfort of Strangers got me all upside down and ended with a big WHOA! moment. Being There, on the other hand, is a quite funny look at societies. Even though it takes place in the US in 1970, it's accurate for many other countries and definitely accurate for our time and day.

Bu 2011'de okuduğum kitaplara yönelik yazılarımın sonuncusu. Bu son yazıyı yazarken yılsonuna doğru kitap yorumları konusunda tembelleştiğimi farkettim. Neyse... Bu gruptaki kitaplar arasından Etgar Keret'inkiler favorilerim arasında. Keret oldukça heyecan verici bir keşifti ve bunun için kendisini okumamı tavsiye eden kardeşime ne kadar teşekkür etsem azdır. Bir de Yol var... Yol! Canıma okuyan kitaplardan bir tanesi. Bir çok şey hakkında düşünmemi sağlayan, duygudan duyguya koşturan bir kitaptı. Yabancı Kucak ise yine favorilerim arasında. Özellikle sonuyla beni allak bullak etti. Being There ise topluma traji-komik bir bakış açısı sunan bir kitap. Gülelim mi, ağlayalım mı diye karar veremiyor insan okurken. Hikaye Amerika'da geçiyor olmasına rağmen bugün pek çok toplum için geçerli olduğunu ve 1970'lerde yazılmış olmasına rağmen ne yazık ki günümüz için de geçerli olduğunu söyleyebilirim.

A majority of the books I've read and loved this year are in this 3rd pile. Those are Veronika Decides to Die, Sputnik Sweetheart, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Kürk Mantolu Madonna, Just Kids and The Phantom Tollbooth. I've especially fallen in love with The Phantom Tollbooth, and I wish I'd read it when I was a kid.

My favorites out of this bunch are The Blackberry Bush, No One Writes to the Colonel, Room, the Insider's Guide and Shibumi. The Blackberry Bush is a YA novel full of hope and lovely coincidences. I remember feeling feeling positive and happy after I was done reading it. Room is quite the opposite-- based on a true story, it's heart-breaking and rather nerve-wrecking. The Insider's Guide is definitely a must-read for everyone who loves the Black Dagger Brotherhood. You can definitely find out a lot more about the brothers and their world. Shibumi was ridiculous at times, but I very much enjoyed the story and the excitement.

Bu gruptan favorilerim The Blackberry Bush, Albaya Mektup Yok, Oda, J.R. Ward'un kitabı ve Şibumi. The Blackberry Bush'u bana yazar kendisi gönderdi. Çok pozitif ve umut dolu bir gençlik kitabı. Türkçe'ye çevirilmesiyle ilgilenen bir yayınevi var diyordu. Umarım yakında çevirilir çünkü cidden herkesin okuyup mutlu olması gereken bir kitap. Oda ise tam tersi hisler uyandırıyor insanda. Gerçek bir öyküyü baz alıyor kitap ve insanın sinirini bozuyor açıkçası. J.R. Ward'un Black Dagger Brotherhood kardeşliğinin perde arkasını ele alan kitabı da şahaneydi. Zaten abuk subuk vampir kitapları dahi Türkçe'ye çevirilirken bunları niye çevirmiyorlar anlamıyorum. Şibumi'nin ise 'yok artık!' veya 'oha!' dedirten pek çok yeri vardı ancak bence oldukça heyecanlı bir hikayeydi.

Little Bee I wasn't 100% content with. I guess the ending of the story quite bugged me. Owl in Love I've marked as a 'waste of time.' I feel bad saying this about any book, but I disliked it a great deal. For Esther's Inheritance, which was a very interesting read, I couldn't write a review because I'm clueless about the time and location it takes place in. I have a feeling certain things in the book had to do with that history.

Küçük Arı da tam olmamış gibi geldi bana. Sonuna da bir gıcık oldum. Owl in Love (Aşık Baykuş) da zaman kaybı olarak nitelendireceğim kitaplardan. Özellikle kitaplar söz konusu olduğunda böyle yorumlar yapmayı hiç sevmiyorum ancak cidden hiç ama hiç sevmedim, sevemedi bu kitabı. Ester's Inheritance (Esther'in Mirası) kısa, değişik ve güzel bir kitaptı. Ona bir eleştiri yazamadım çünkü hikayenin geçtiği zaman ve yer hakkında en ufak bir fikrim yoktu. Kişilere odaklanan bir kitap olmasına rağmen aralarda tarihle ilgili bir şeylerin olduğunu hissettim. Okumamın ardından da araştırmaya üşendim sanırım.

I must say I've read some amazing books in 2011. It was exciting to meet new authors that I know I will keep following. Having said that, I've also read some books that I felt were a waste of time. After reading and liking the Twilight Saga, I found myself searching for more YA books that were similar. I've found out this genre can get VERY tricky. The Mortal Instruments series were amazing. They were more Harry Potter and a lot less Twilight, if that makes any sense... I haven't gotten around to the fourth book yet, which was released in 2011, but I'm hoping to get to it this year. Well, I continued my YA journey with Firelight, which was a big disappointment. So now, I'm even more careful when it comes to YA-- it feels like most of them are the same story in a different setting, no?

Tüm rezil özelliklerine rağmen Alacakaranlık serisini okuyup beğendikten sonra gençlere yönelik farklı kitaplar aramaya başladım. Farkında vardım ki bu kitapların iyilerini ve değişik olanlarını bulmak sandığım kadar kolay değil. Ölümcül Oyuncaklar şahaneydi mesela. Alacakaranlık'tan çok daha bir Harry Potter'lardı sanki... Daha dördüncü kitabı elime geçiremedim ama bu sene okumayı umuyorum kendisini. Öte yandan yine gençlik kitabı olan Alev Işığı tam bir zaman kaybıydı. Bundan sonra bu tarzda kitap okuyacağım zaman çok daha dikkatli olacağım. Zaten hepsi aynı olayın farklı karakter ve lokasyonlarla olanı gibi değil mi biraz?


I also wasn't too impressed by Deja Dead, which Ive been looking to reading for a long time. I love the TV show Bones that's based on it, so I'm guessing it might get better later. I'd bought the first three books as a set, so I'll continue reading when I get around to it.

Çoktan Ölmüştü de pek içi açıcı değildi. Uzun zamandır bu kitapları okumak için can atıyordum ama biraz hayal kırıklığına uğradım. Kitaplardan uyarlanan Bones dizisini çok sevdiğim için devamını okumayı deneyeceğim. 3'lü set olarak almıştım bu kitapları, en azından elimde olanları denemeyi planlıyorum.


And the Sookie Stackhouse series... I can't read one right after the other when it comes to Sookie because she still annoys the hell out of me. I'll admit the books do get better though. I think Dead to the World is my favorite so far.

Sookie Stackhouse serisi işte bambaşka bir durum. Bunları peş peşe okuyamıyorum çünkü Sookie beni cidden sinir ediyor. Ama itiraf etmem gerekiyor ki kitaplar gittikçe daha heyecanlı oluyor. Sanırım Cadı Ölüsü şu ana kadarki favorim.

2011 Favorites

Today's the last day of 2011. It hasn't been a good year for me, and that's reflected in my reading challenges as well. I haven't been able to complete a single one! But I'm still hopeful next year will be better. 

I've managed to read 40 out of 50 books I aimed for. I'll put up an overview tomorrow, but today I want to share my favorite reads from 2011.

 

I've been trying to pick my top 5 for about a week now, and I think I'm finally content with my picks. It's just so hard when you've read too many great books in a year. So, in no particular order:

1. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Justed: I haven't reviewed this one because I had way too much to say about it. So now I'll try to sum it up here: I've always wanted to go on an adventure like this, and I'm kinda upset that I didn't get to read this when I was a kid. I want to go to Dictionapolis and live there forever and ever. And I want the Mathemagician and Digitopolis to stay away from just as long.
2. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami: Murakami was an amazing discovery. I can't believe I waited so long to check out his work. I've read this one and Sputnik Sweetheart by him this year, and I love them both. Read my review of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
3. Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho: This was one of those books that makes one question sanity, what's considered sane and how one and who decides what is and what isn't. It's a heart-breaking yet amazing story. Read my review of Veronike Decides to Die.
4. The Road by Cormac McCarthy: This is such an amazing book about what happens when the world as we know it ends. It's dark and heart-breaking, but it's also full of love and hope. Keep some Kleenex close to you while you read it. Read my review of The Road.
5. Kneller's Happy Campers by Etgar Keret: Etgar Keret was another amazing discovery from 2011. I've read this one and The Girl on the Fridge by him this year and loved them both. The man was writing Flash Fiction before it was cool, and he's brilliant at it. His stories are shocking, cute, weird and sometimes sickening. Oh, and, this was also the book the movie Wristcutters was based on. Read my review of Kneller's Happy Campers.
