Vacation!

If blogger doesn't mess up scheduled posts, I'll be on vacation while you're reading this. I have a total of nine days off for the Ramadan Holidays, and I'm hoping to get quite a bit of beach reading done in Southern Turkey. Here's what I've packed with me:

1. Just Kids by Patti Smith (I've already started reading this)
2. Vineyard Supernatural: True Ghost Stories from America's Most Haunted Island by Holly Nadler
3. Mary Modern by Camille DeAngelis
4. The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent

I don't know how much reading I'll be able to get done, but hopefully I'll come back with a few reviews.

Bu kitap Türkçe'ye çevirilmemiş. Çok uğraşmadım bulmak için gerçi ama çevirilmiş olsaydı Google'da çıkardı diye düşünüyorum. Bir şey kaybetmiyoruz aslında. Kitap, Doktor Olaf van Schuler'ın hikayesiyle başlıyor ve ondan sonraki nesilin, ailesindekilerin hikayesini anlatıyor. Schuler'ın annesi deli bir kadın ve doktor ruhun beyinde olduğuna inanıyor. Onu nasıl iyileştirebileceğini bulursa annesini delilikten kurtarabileceğini düşünüyor. Daha çok hayvan beyinlerinde yapıyor deneylerini, onlara ulaşması daha kolay olduğu için. Ancak eline geçirebildiği zamanlarda insan beyinlerini de kesip biçiyor. Şahane bir hikaye gibi değil mi? I IH.

Bayağı hayal kırıklığına uğrattı beni bu kitap. Konusu özet olarak süper ama hikayenin içine girince beklediği hiç bir şeyi bulamıyor insan. İlk ve son hikayeler değişikti; onun dışında bayağı sıkıldığımı söylesem yalan değil. Yazarın stili desen yoktu; 'bu böyle oldu; şu şöyle oldu' diye anlatmış direk, süsleme zahmetine katlanmamış bile. Bu, 1600'lü yıllardan başlayan ve 2000'lere kadar uzanan, insan beyniyle ve ruhun beyinde olması olasılığına kafayı takmış bir ailenin hikayesi... Öyle olması gerekiyordu yani. Ancak ailede kim kimin nesi anlaşılması zor. Her bir bölüm farklı bir nesile ayrılmış ve aralarında bir iki küçük bağlantı dışında hiç bir alaka yok. Farklı dönemlerin havası desen, o da yok.

Bölümler bambaşka insanların hikayeleri olabilirdi ve ruhumuz duymazdı resmen. Karakterlerle de bağlantı kurmak imkansızdı benim için. Öncelikle, hiçbirini tanıma fırsatımız olmuyor adam gibi. Sadece şöyle bir selamlaşıp hayatlarının kısacık bir kısmına tanık oluyoruz. Nereye gittikleri hakkında da bir fikrimiz olmuyor dolayısıyla.

Kitabın tanıtımında Patrick Süskind'in Parfüm'üne benzediği söylenmiş. Ona ayrı bir sinir oldum. En sevdiğim kitaplardan biridir Parfüm ve bunun onunla uzaktan yakından alakası yoktu. Parfüm'ü okurkenki merakım, heyecanımdan eser yoktu. Hatta dediğim gibi sıkıldım bile! Parfüm'ün tam tersi bir durum olaraktan karakterlere karşı da bir şey hissedemedim. Parfüm'ü okumadıysanız mutlaka okuyun derim ancak bu kitabı cidden boşverin. Zamanınıza, gözlerinize, beyninize yazık.

Book Review: Dr. Olaf van Schuler's Brain by Kirsten Menger-Anderson

Doctor Olaf van Schuler's Brain starts with his story and continues with the stories of the next generations. Schuler's mother is a mad woman, and he believes if he fixes the soul, which he believes is in the brain, he will solve her problems. He experiments mostly on animal brains, but he does get a hold of human brains as well whenever possible. Great story, right? WRONG.

I am very disappointed by this book. The promise was very exciting, and there are parts of the book I very much enjoyed, like the first and last stories. Yet, the author doesn't seem to have much a style, and the stories are told quite matter-of-factly. This is the story of (supposed to be, really) a family who are obsessed with the human brain and the soul for generations and generations, starting from 1600s up to 2000s. It was hard to even comprehend the connections of the family members, let alone highlighting what they do and are trying to accomplish. I didn't get much of a sense of the different time lines either.

The chapters did overlap just a little bit, but other than that, they could be stories of completely different people, and you wouldn't know. Characters were quite disconnected as well. For me, characters are just as important as the story line, yet we didn't really get to know any of them. We met them for quite a bit and witnessed a very short part of their lives, but that's about it. For the most part, we don't even get to find out where they did or might end up.

Lastly, Patrick Süskind's Perfume is one of my favorite books of all time, and I'm rather angry that this was compared to it. Honestly, it doesn't even come close. It doesn't have the sense of curiosity or suspense or cringe-worthiness. Most of all, you don't feel anything toward any of the characters, which is very opposite of Perfume. I'd say go read Perfume and don't even waste your time with this one.

Harry Potter ve Felsefe Taşı, çocukluğunda fazla çocuk kitabı okumamış birisi olaraktan 'yetişmem lazım!' krizime, aynı zamanda cadılar ve büyüyle ilgili hikayeler ilgi duymama denk geldi. Rupert'cık daha Ron Weasley olacağından habersiz, mahallesinde bisiklete binerken bekliyordum ben onu. 2001'de de aynı hayal ettiğim Ron olarak çıkıverdi karşıma.

I've actually met this cute little boy back in 1999. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came at a time when, having grown up reading adult books, I had the "I gotta catch up!" jitters. Also, it was around the time when I was getting interesting in anything concerning witches and magic. Before little Rupert knew he was going to be cast as Ron Weasley, riding his bike around town, I was waiting for him. And then, in 2001, there he was before me as Ron.

Genelde kitapların film yapılması durumundan nefret eden bir insan olarak ilk filme hiç düşünmeden gittiğimi hatırlıyorum. Kütüphane bekçisinin kedisinden okulun duvarlarındaki taşlara kadar hayal ettiğim dünya trailer'larda bile karşımda duruyordu. Sonrası heyecanla yeni kitapları ve filmleri beklemekten oluşan, bu yıl ne yazık ki bitmiş olan şahane bir yolculuk zaten.

I usually hate the notion of books being made into films, but I remember going to the first Harry Potter movie without any hesitation. From the library cat to the bricks on the walls of Hogwarts, even the movie trailer was everything I'd imagined. After that is an exciting journey of waiting for new books and movies to be released, which unfortunately has ended this year.

Yılın Ölüsü - Charlaine Harris

Tuhaf ve seksi garson kız Sookie Stackhouse’a
kapılmamanın yolu yok. Bizi de al Sookie! Bizi de!

Louisiana’lı garson Sookie Stackhouse’un pek akrabası kalmamıştı. Orleans’ın vampir Kraliçesi’nin gözdesi, uzun zamandır görüşmediği vampir kuzeni Hadley ölünce de bu yüzden çok ama çok üzüldü. Hadley her şeyini Sookie’ye bırakmıştı ama bu mirası kabul etmek büyük riskleri de beraberinde getirecekti. Bazıları Sookie’nin, kuzeninin geçmişine ve sahip olduklarına burnunu sokmasını fazla istemiyordu. Sookie’yi durdurmak için ne gerekiyorsa yapacaklardı! Onlar her kimse, çok tehlikeliydiler ve bahtsız Sookie’nin hayatı yine pamuk ipliğine bağlıydı.

Yılın Ölüsü hakkında söyleyecek pek bir şey yok aslında. Sookie'nin kuzeni, vampir Hadley ölüyor ve eşyalarını toparlamak ve gerekli işleri halletmek için Sookie'nin Louisiana'ya gitmesi gerekiyor. Gidince de görüyor ki Hadley Louisiana'daki vampir kraliçenin sevgilisiymiş. Kraliçenin evleniyor olmasını da kıskanıyormuş. Ayrıca, Sookie'nin öldürdüğü, önceden Alcide'in sevgilisi olan hatunun ailesi hala Sookie'nin peşinde neler olduğunu tamamen öğrenmek umuduyla. Veeeeee Sookie'ciğimiz kaplana dönüşen Quinn abiyle işi pişirmeye çalışıyor. Ben Quinn'e bayağı sinir oldum yalnız; özellikle her cümlesini 'babe' diye bitirmesi beynimi çiziyor resmen.

Yılın Ölüsü'nün benim için en heyecanlı kısmı kraliçe ve ismini hatırlamadığım vampirin düğünüydü. Oldukça politik bir olay olması da şaşırtıcı olmasa da ilginçti. Ancak Sookie ablamız her zamanki gibi ortalığı karıştırmakla meşgul olduğu için ben düğün olayından pek bir şey anlamadım. Hadley'nin ev sahibi, cadı olan Amelia'yı sevdim ama. Sookie'yle birlikte Bon Temps'e gidiyor olması da heyecanlandırıyor beni cadılar yine çıkacak meydana diye. Eğlenceli cadıları göremedik daha. Görelim!

Kitabın önemli olayı Sookie'de peri kanı olduğunu öğrenmemiz. İlk başta bir 'Vay be! Ne güzel!' diye heyecanlanıyor insan. Ancak Sookie yine dırdır etmeye başlayınca kanına da sana da moduna geçiyorsunuz. 'Yazık banaaa, normal erkekler düşüncelerini duyabiliyorum diye sevmiyorlar beni, vampirler de sadece kanım için beni istiyor!' Bir sus Sookie be, bir sus.

Bill'in yaptığı adiliğe girmeyeceğim bile çünkü kendisi ilgi alanıma girmiyor. Ondan beklemeyeceğim bir işler karıştırmış gerçi ama kim takar. Sookie kendisine çok sinirli ama en azından 'ayy başka kızla çıkıyor' triplerinden daha mantıklı bir hareket bu seferki.

Şimdi kraliçenin Sookie'yi ayak işlerine yollayıp yollamayacağını merak ediyorum. Yollayacak bence. Ayrıca Eric niye pırt diye bir yerlerden çıkıp sonra kayboluyor ortadan? Alcide nerelerde? Jason ve Crystal n'oldu? Niye Quinn her yerde?

I'll admit there have been quite a few books that I've bought just for the title, without even really bothering to read the blurb. I'm having a hard time remembering them now, but here's 2 of the most recent ones that got me by their titles.

Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho

Again, just the title alone made me wonder why she decided to die, and how it all turned out. You can read my review here.

Books that caught my eye

Lately, I haven't been able to spot any books. Has everyone stopped reading all of a sudden? So here's some that caught my eye around the interwebz that I would like to check out.

Mr. and Mrs. Fang called it art.

Book Review: Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris

 

Sixth in the Anthony Award-winning Southern Vampire series.

Spiked with a frothy fusion of romance, mystery, and fantasy, this bestselling series sends the supernaturally gifted cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse to New Orleans, where she has to deal with the legacy of one of her own family and a host of potentially dangerous characters.

I seriously don't have much to say about this one. Sookie's cousin, Hadley the vampire, dies and Sookie needs to go to Louisiana to gather her things. When she gets there, it turns out Hadley was the lover of The Queen of Louisiana, and she was jealous that the queen was getting married, Also, the parents of Alcide's boyfriend that Sookie killed (I'm too lazy to even look her name up) are still after her. Oh, aaaaaaand, she's trying to get it on with the weretiger Quinn, whom I did not find attractive at all. Especially when he adds a "babe" at the end of his sentences, my brain cringes. 

The most interesting aspect of Definitely Dead for me was the vampire wedding because it's more political than anything else. Yet, since Sookie was way too busy doing her own thing, I didn't get to see as much detail as I'd wanted. Amelia the witch, Hadley's landlord was pretty cool, and I'm rather excited about her going back to Bon Temps with Sookie. We didn't get to see the fun witches yet, and I'm hoping they'll show up at some point.

The big thing of this book is that it turns out Sookie has fairy blood. First it makes one go, "Ooooh, how cool!" But then, as expected, Sookie starts bitching about it, and all the excitement fades away. Oh, poor me, I can't have normal guys because I can read their minds; I can't have supernatural guys either because they're drawn to my fairy blood. Boo-to-the-hoo. 

I'm not even going to get into what an asshole Bill's been to Sookie because I couldn't care less. It's not something I wouldn't expect from him, but then maybe I shouldn't 'cos he's supposed to be the "good guy?" I don't know. Yet, Sookie's super-pissed at him, which isn't new news, but this time she at least has a better reason than Bill trying to make her jealous by dating a different girl.

Now I'm wondering if Sookie's going to be the Queen's pet and be sent to different assignments. And what's Eric up to besides popping out just so he shows up? Where's Alcide? What's up with Jason and Crystal? Why's Quinn everywhere?

These are what I'm wondering right now.

Book review: Veronika Decides to Die

24-year-old Veronika is a beautiful girl who has everything, but she's not happy. Seeing that a lot is wrong with the world, she decides there's no point in living and commits suicide by taking way too many sleeping pills. While she's waiting to die, a sentence in a magazine catches her eye: "Where is Slovenia?" Being angry at the fact that nobody knows where her country is, Veronika writes a letter to the magazine, letting them know where Slovenia is. And this ends up being her suicide letter. While losing consciousness, Veronika goes into panic, thinking "If I puke, I won't die," but it's too late, and everything goes dark.  At the end, she doesn't die; she finds herself at a mental institution. She's told that she did not die, yet the sleeping pills caused a problem with her heart and that she'll die soon.

The main character being Veronika, one things the book will be entirely about her story and how she got there. Yet, we meet different characters and get a glimpse of their stories. Zedka is depressed. Mari has panic attacks. Eduard, whom Veronika ends up falling in love with, is schizophrenic. And Dr. Igor is someone who tries different things on his patients and then writes papers about his experiments. I'll admit that on the subject psychology, there's usually no straight answer, but the Doctor made me angry. She told Veronika she would die soon just to push her back to life. I felt like he needed patients at the hospital, and he was way too eager to do research on them for his papers.

The book explores the notion of "craziness" through the characters and their stories, Veronika being in the center. It's a book where every reader can find a piece of themselves. People get scared of behavior that is different form what they're used to, and therefore put those kind of people into the "crazy" category. When Veronika figures this out, she realized her freedom: "I'm crazy anyway, so I can do anything" kind of realization. As a result of this, she dares to do thing she didn't dare before like love, hate and sexual awakening. In the meantime, she falls in love with Eduard, who's in his own world yet seems to love it when Veronika plays the piano.

In the end, Dr. Igor doesn't tell Veronika the truth and she goes on living thinking that she might die any day. The Doctor believes that this way Veronika will see each day as a miracle, and he sits down to write about his "experiment" with her. This is something that left me at a crossroad: is it okay to make someone believe they might die any day just for the possibility that they'll start enjoying life? Doesn't the person deserve the truth? Would they try to die again if they learned the truth? There are questions I cannot answer. But life, with its ugliness and tough times is worth living and there might be a miracle, a surprise or something exciting any second.

Toplumun alışılmış kalıplarının dışına çıkan, farklı düşünceleri yüzünden önyargıları göğüslemek zorunda kalan insanları anlatıyor.

24 yaşındaki Veronika güzel, her şeye sahip olan bir kız ancak mutlu değil. Dünyada pek çok şeyin yanlış gittiğini, bu nedenle yaşamanın bir nedeni olmadığına karar veriyor ve uyku ilaçları alarak intihar ediyor. Tam öldüm öleceğim derken bir dergideki cümle çarpıyor gözüne: "Slovenya nerededir?" Veronika'yla birlikte akıl hastanesinde olan karakterlerle ve onun doktoruyla. Zedka, depresyonda. Mari, panik atak. Veronika'nın aşık olduğu Eduard ise şizofren. Dr. Igor ise hastalarının üzerinde farklı şeyler deneyerek tezine malzeme arayan bir adam. Tamam, konu psikoloji olduğu zaman pek fazla kesin ve net çözüm yok ancak ben kendisine sinirlendim kitap boyunca. Veronika'yı hayata bağlamak için kendisine ölmesi gerektiğini söyledi mesela. Hastanenin dolu olması gerektiği ve tezi için inceleme yapması gerektiği için hastaların hiçbirini salmak istemiyormuş gibi hissettim ve bu duruma sinirlendim.
