Book Review: Firelight by Sophie Jordan

This book did not work for me. I wanted to like it, I really did, but it didn't happen. Our main character, Jacinda, is a draki, and she's a fire-breather, which makes her special among her pride. One day, when she's out with her friend in riot-girl mode, they run into hunters, and the one who finds her, Will, doesn't turn her in. She cannot stop thinking about him, and when her mother moves her and her non-draki sister away from the pride, she starts school only to find Will there.

I really liked the promise of the story, if not the story itself. The whole idea of draki, descendant from dragons, was very, very exciting. Jacinda is special because fire-breathers are thought to be extinct. There are also different kinds of draki, which I would have loved to explore more, but they were only mentioned between the lines. Anyway... Even though she's special and everyone values her for what she is, Jacinda is a weak character. She was trying to be free and independent, but most of the time I thought she was way too scared to actually go ahead and do it. Considering her age, her confusion about everything make sense, like the way she changes her mind about Will like a thousand times... But I wasn't a fan of it going on for more than 200-something pages. Maybe it's just me, but I seriously thought the story moved very slow with not much happening.

Her mother and sister were a different story. Her mother let her draki die a long time ago, and her sister never descended. So what the mother does is run away from the pride and force Jacinda to let her draki die. Yes, we know the pride only wants her for being a fire-breather and pretty much wants to use her for a baby-making machine, but forcing your daughter to deny what she is didn't sit well with me. Then again, Jacinda isn't sure either whether it would be good to hold onto what she is or sacrifice that side of her for her mother and sister.

The other thing I didn't get is... Is she a draki, or is draki a part of her? She keeps referring to her state as "my draki," but then sometimes she'll say "I'm draki." I thought she was a draki able to appear on human form, but sometimes I felt like she felt more like a human than a draki. She's never really sure whether she wants to let her draki die like her mother wants her to, but then when she meets Will, that side of her becomes hard to control. She knows he's a hunter, but he also didn't turn her in, so even if she wanted to, she couldn't stop herself from being around him. At one point, we even find out that Will really does remember her from the first time he saw her. He mentions something like there's something that drives him to the draki, and that makes him a good hunter. Of course, though, we never find out what that really is, which was disappointing.

I can't end this by complaining about the the references to Jacinda's skin. I understand her skin is a big part of the draki, but after the first few descriptions of her skin getting dry or hot or gold-colored, I kinda got tired of hearing about it. I wish this book was more draki and less human drama. The good thing about is though that I finished it one night. So if you're looking for a somewhat different, quick read, I'd say don't mind me too much and give it a shot.

EDIT: The lovely Leanna at Daisy Chain Book Reviews told me that we DO after all find out why Will's drawn to draki. For some reason, I totally missed out on that.

Camlar Şehri için değerdi!

Camlar Şehri, Ölümcül Oyuncaklar serisinin üçüncü kitabı... Normalde seri bu kitapla birlikte bitecekmiş... O nedenle pek çok şey gün ışığına çıkıyor, sırların bazıları çözülüyor. Sonunda bütün Gölgeavcılarının bahsedip durduğu 'evleri' olan Idris, Alicante'ye gidiyoruz. Clary'nin annesini komadan uyandırmak için orada bulması gereken birşey var ve Gölgeavcılarının da bir araya gelip Valentine hakkında ne yapacaklarına karar vermeleri gerekiyor. Simon'ı Jace bir şekilde sürüklüyor Alicante'ye. Gitmemesi yüz bin kere tembihlenen asabi kızımız Clary de inat edip gidince Luke da birden kendini orada buluyor.

Büyücü Magnus Bane ve Alec benim favori karakterlerim. Başından beri Magnus'a bayılmıştım zaten, şimdi yüzde yüz eminim favorim olduğundan. Alec de bir kurtuluyor donukluğundan, şirin mi şirin! Tabii bu kitapta en heyecanlı kısım Valentine'ın geçmişi ve nasıl bu hale gelebildiğini okumaktı. Önceki kitaplarda şimdi ondan nefret edenler bile bir zamanlar onu ne kadar çok sevdiklerini, ona ne kadar güvendiklerini ve inandıklarını anlatıp duruyorlardı. İnsan ister istemez düşünüyor tabii nasıl olmuş da bu psikopatı sevmişler diye. Geçmişini okuyunca hakkaten inanıyorsunuz bir zamanlar doğru olanı yapmaya çalıştığına ancak kendisi Downworlders'lardan daha zayıf olduğuna inanmış ve bunun ezikliğini üstünden atamamış. Hırs yapmış adam resmen onların güçleri bende niye yok diye. Buna egosu da eklenince doğmayan çocuğunun üzerinde saçma sapan ve ölümcül olabilecek deneyler yapmaya kadar götürmüş işi.

Savaşın eşiğinde olmalarının aksiyonuyla birlikte çok fazla da duygu uçuşuyor ortalıkta. Bunlar sadece karakterler arasında kalmıyor, okuyucuya da yansıyor. Bir an ağlamanın eşiğine gelmişken birden bire sinirden kuduruyorsunuz. Hele ki Shadowhunterların çoğuna öyle bir sinir oldum ki anlatamam... 'Biz Valentine'la savaşamayız' diye tutturdular gitti bir ara. Downworlder'larla beraber yaşamayı kabul etmek yerine teslim olcaklardı o manyağa. Nasıl sinirlenmesin insan?

Idris de yeni karakterlerle de tanışıyoruz. Sebastian'la tanıştığınız zaman o işte bir iş olduğunu anlıyorsunuz (zaten ismi Sebastian olan çocuktan ne beklenir ki?) ama ne olabileceğini tam kestiremiyorsunuz. Ne çıkacak bunun atından acaba diyerek okumaya devam edince de görüyorsunuz ki çıkacak çok şey var. Hiç beklenmedik ölümler bunlardan bir tanesi... Bir yandan da önceki kitaplardaki ölümlerin anlamının aslında ne kadar büyük olduğu anlaşılıyor.

Karakterlerin nasıl büyüyüp geliştiğini görmek de çok zevkliydi. Olaylar ve birbirlerine olan bağlılıkları nedeniyle hem çocuklar hem de yetişkinler büyüyor aslında... Clary'nin en yakın arkadaşı Simon başından beri pek şekerdi ama insan bir üzülüyordu çocuğun haline. Clary'ye aşık, aralarında birşey olmayacağını biliyor ama yine de kızı sevmekten vazgeçemiyor, okurken içi eriyor insanın. Eriyordu demem lazım aslında çünkü bu kitapta hem Clary'yle arasında olanları çözüyor kendi içinde, hem de vampir olduğunun iyice bir farkında varıyor, insan bir seviniyor.

Bir sonraki kitap Nisan'da çıkıyor ve hikayenin nereye gideceğini çok merak ediyorum. Sonuçta bitmiş olması lazımdı ama bitmedi. İyi ki de bitmedi.



 

Book Review: City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters -- never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight. 

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadow-hunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadow-hunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. City of Glass is the third installment of the Mortal Instruments series, and since it was meant to be the last book in the series, this is where everything comes into light, if one can put it that way. The journey there, of course, is a tough and dark one, though. In this book, we finally see Idris and Alicante, the place where all Shadowhunters call home and miss to death. Clary needs something from there to save her mother and wake her up from her coma, Shadowhunters need to get together to decide what they're going to do about Valentine, and Luke and Simon just kind of get dragged to the city even though they have no intention of going in the first place.

The warlock Magnus Bane is still my favorite character, and he and Alec are my favorite couple to watch. However, in this book, one of the most interesting parts was finding out more about Valentine and seeing how he became the monster he is. In the previous books, all the adults Valentine had been friends with in the past were mentioning how much they loved him, trusted him and believed him. And hearing about his past his past, I too believed that he was working toward a greater cause, but there was something underneath it, the fear of being less powerful than the Downworlders. The only reason he hates them is because he's envious of them, which makes him quite pathetic, really. His ego gets the best of him and he experiences on his own UNBORN child. What kinda psycho does that?

In addition to all the action that takes place due to being at the edge of a war, there was also a lot of emotion floating around. And not just among the characters either-- they reflect to the reader. I was on the verge of tears at one point and then I found myself getting mad the next minute. Shadowhunters (not all of them, but most) seriously ticked me off at certain point because they were thinking seriously about surrendering to Valentine instead of accepting they could get along with Downworlders and fight for their freedom.

We also meet quite a bunch of new people in Idris. When Sebastian was introduced, I knew something smelled fishy just because he was the way he was, yet I did not expect the turn of events. And there are certain things you expect to happen, and when they do they do in such an exciting way that it was so exciting to read about. There are deaths that are very much unexpected and very sad to read about, but then we find out that the deaths we didn't care too much for in the previous books actually had great significance.

The character development is also another very well done part of this book. It's, as always, amazing to see how they grow up--both the children AND the adults-- due to what's happening around them and with each other, and to see what lengths they'll go to for one another because they're friends and family. I've always liked Clary's best friend Simon, and I was so sad for him, for how he's in love with Clary and can't help it even though he knows it's never going to happen. The way he came to terms with everything, his love for Clary and the fact that he's a vampire, brought me the greatest of joys.

Like I've mentioned before, City of Glass was meant to be the conclusion to the series, but it's not and the fourth book, City of Fallen Angels is coming out in April. I'm very excited to see where it's going to go because, seriously, it could go anywhere. 

Kitap Yorum: Çoktan Ölmüştü - Kathy Reichs

Kathy Reichs'tan Yeni Bir Tempe Brennan Romanı: Çoktan Ölmüştü Kelebek Yayınevi tarafından çıkartılan "Tempe Brennan Dizisi"ne yeni bir romanı daha eklendi. Adli tıp uzmanımız bu sefer, poşetlere doldurulmuş ve parçalanmış olarak bulunan cesetler ile uğraşmak zorunda kalıyor. Kathy Reichs'in eserlerini dilimize çevirdiği için Kelebek Yayınevi'ne ne kadar teşekkür etsek azdır. Ancak romanları sıraya göre piyasaya sunsa, daha da fazla sevineceğiz. Çoktan Ölmüştü, dizinin ilk kitabı. Daha evvel ise Pazartesi Cinayetleri

Bunun cidden Deja Dead'in Türkçesi olduğuna dair bir kanıt bulamadım hiçbir sayfada kitabın orijinal ismi yazmadığı için. Tanıtımı da gördüğünüz gibi olmasa hissetmeyeceğiniz bir açıklama... Ama isminin çevirisi tutuyor. O yüzden doğruymus farzediyorum...

Çoktan Ölmüştü, Temperance Brennan serisinin ilk romanı. Bones dizisini cidden çok seviyorum ve kitaplardan baz alındıklarını görünce 'hemen bunları bulup okumam lazım!' moduna girdim doğal olarak. Bu ilk kitabı bulamıyordum hiçbir yerde, o yüzden seriye başlamam çok uzun sürdü. İyi mi yaptım kötü mü yaptım bilmiyorum şuan gerçi çünkü tamam, nefret etmedim kitaptan. Ama açıkçası bayılmadım da... Bir de elimde olmadan sürekli diziyle karşılaştırıyorum çünkü olayları bırakın, Temperance karakterinin bile dizidekiyle pek bir alakası yok.

Dizide laburatuvarda kemiklerin incelenme kısmı çok hoşuma gidiyordu. Hatta 'amanın bakın el kemiklerinin bilimsel ismini öğrendim' şeklinde de seviniyordum saf saf. Ancak kitapta o kısımlar korkulu rüyam oldu resmen. Reichs'ın gerçek hayatta da bu işlerle uğraştığını bilmeseniz bile anlarsınız kesin çünkü o kadar çok ayrıntıya giriyor ki, insan neye uğradığını şaşırıyor. Tamam, meraklandırıyor insanı hikaye ancak bu kısımlar çok uzun sürdüğü için asıl aksiyonlar arasında çok uzun zaman geçmiş gibi geliyor. Ben şahsen bazen 'en son kimin ailesiyle konuştu ki bu şimdi buna gidiyor?' şeklinde dönüp geriye hatırlamak zorunda kaldım. E böyle olunca da okurken yoruluyor resmen insan. Bir de bence çok fazla Fransızca kullanmış. Bir kaç satır sonrasında size bir şekilde söylüyor anlamını ama bana eziyet gibi geldi şahsen.

Bildiğim kadarıyla bu Reichs'ın yazdığı ilk roman. Daha iyi bir şekilde edit edilebilirdi ve kısaltılabilirdi bence. Serinin ilk 3 kitabını set halinde almıştım. Diğerlerini de okuyacağım, merak ediyorum çünkü ancak artık acele etmek gelmiyor içimden.

Book Review: Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs

First of all, I would like to say that I cannot believe I've finally finished this book. And second of all, it's one of those books which are very hard to review once you're done reading them. It just leads up to the cliche: I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I found the first three books as a set at the London airport for only £5, and I was super-excited to start reading them since I've been searching for the first book, Deja Dead, for quite some time. I'm such a big fan of the show Bones, and in my world everything is better on paper, which is why I guess I had such high expectations from this book.

I guess I shouldn't even be comparing the book and the TV show, but I cannot help it. Because in the show, I loved the parts where they examined the bones as much as I loved the parts where they chase criminals. In the book, however, the lab parts seemed to drag forever, to the point where I seriously felt like I've been reading the book forever. And then, of course, it got impossible to keep reading it for more than one chapter, and I found myself forgetting where the actual 'action' part of the investigation left off. I found myself getting very excited when the action picked up, only to be let down when it slowed way down again. The books takes place in Montreal, which was pretty cool, but I thought the French in it was a bit overdone, which was another part of the book that seemed to slow me down.

All in all, it's an interesting book, and Reichs is in no way a bad writer. Yet you feel this is first book while reading it, and knowing she's a forensic anthropologist in real life, you very much feel how she feels every single detail is necessary. I feel like this would be a much better, much exciting book if it was edited tighter and maybe like 100 pages shorter. I'm still curious about how the series will continue, though, so I'll read the next two and see where they take me.

Ölümcül Oyuncaklar serisinin ikinci kitabı Küller Şehri, Kemikler Şehri'nin kaldığı yerden birkaç hafta sonra başlıyor. Clary'nin annesi hala hastanede ve Clary amcası Luke'un evinde kalıyor. Orda da Simon'la bol bol zaman geçiriyor. Tabii bir yandan da Jace'e karşı olan hisleriyle savaşıyor kızımız. Erkek kardeşine aşık sonuçta, öyle kolay bir durumda değil kendisi. Bu arada bir yandan da Simon'la sevgili gibi oluyorlar. Aşk üçgeni bir çılgın yani anlayacağınız... Ama mutlu şeyler sürer mi hiç? Sürmez! Hele ki Valentine gibi bir adam varsa ortalıkta hiç sürmez. Nitekim Valentine amca ortalığı karıştırmaya başlıyor yine. İblis ordusu kurarak Gölgeavcılarına saldırmayı planlıyor bu sefer.

Böyle özetledim, ayrıntılardan da bahsetmek istiyorum aslında ama cidden nereden başlayacağıma karar veremiyorum. Bir yandan başlarına gelen olaylar, savaşlar, vesayire, bir yandan kim kime aşık o ona ne dedi bilmemne konuları derken uçup gidiyor herşey. Demin bahsettiğim JaceClarySimon aşk üçgeni var mesela. Sonracığıma Isabelle bir periyle çıkıyor, yeni vampirler doğuyor, periler Gölgeavcılarını partilerine davet ediyor. Ayrıca ölenler ve ölüme çok yaklaşanlar da var. Okurken öyle bir heyecanlanıyor ve panik yapıyor ki insan bir süre durup, derin bir nefes alıp öyle devam edebiliyorsunuz ancak.

Küller Şehri'nde bir de Alec ve Isabelle'in ebeveynleri ve küçük kardeşleri Max ile tanışıyoruz. Gölgeavcılarının dünyasına daha bir giriyoruz ve tabii yine vampirler, kurtadamlar ve periler de var. Ve tabii ki saymakla birmeyen çeşitte iblisler... Ayrıca da Clary ve Jace'in özel yeteneklerine de şöyle bir bakma şansımız oluyor. Ancak tamamen ne oldu, nasıl oldu ben anlamadım şahsen. Sanıyorum yazarımız burada bir merak yaratmaya çalışmış ve başarmış çünkü ben çatlıyorum n'oluyor n'oluyor diye.

İlk kitap hakkında yazdığımda Magnus Bane karakterini aklınızda tutun demiştim. Onun hala arkasındayım; hatta şuan Magnus favori karakterim bile diyebilirim. Hem sevecen hem esprili, hem de hazır cevaplığı çok hoşuma gidiyor. Diğer karakterleri de hala seviyorum tabii ama Luke'tan çok emin değilim. Kötü bir adam olduğundan falan değil ama fazla yetişkin hali bir geriyor beni. Bir rahatla, bırak n'aparlarsa yapsınlar diyesim geliyor. Hakkaten geçmişte yaşadıklarını omuzlarında taşıyor ve bunu her hareketinde hissediyorsunuz.

Genel bakıldığında karakterlerin nasıl geliştiğini, birbirlerine yardım etmek için neler yapabileceklerini görmek çok güzeldi. Hatırlarsanız bu kitapların Harry Potter'ı andırdığından da bahsetmiştim? Küller Şehri'nde Harry Potter'a göndermeler var! İçimdeki 12 yaşındaki kız nasıl sevinip havalara uçtu anlatamam.

Yalnız bir tane negatif yorumum var: Türkçe kitabın kapağı niye bu kadar çirkin? Türkçe'ye 'Mekanik Melek' olarak çevrilen, yine Cassandra Clare tarafından yazılan 'Clockwork Angel'ı geçen gün kitapçıda gördüm. Kapağı aynen kullanmışlar, iyi olmuş. Bunu da öyle yapsalarmış keşke. Şahsen kapaktaki bu kız benim kafamdaki Clary'ye hiç ama hiç benzemiyor. İnsan bir sinir oluyor böyle durumlarda.

Book Review: City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

Clary Fray just wishes her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires and faeries? Clary would love to spend more time with her best friend, Simon. But the Shadowhunters won't let her go-- especially her handsome, infuriating newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil-- and also her father. When the second of the Mortal Instruments is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor suspects Jace. Could Jace really be willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

City of Ashes, the second installment of The Mortal Instruments series, picks up a little after where City of Bones leaves off. Clary's mother is still in the hospital, and Clary's staying with Luke, her uncle, and spending most of her time with Simon. She's still dealing with having feelings for Jace, and having found out that he's her brother, she's having quite a hard time with it. In the meantime, she's started up a relationship with Simon, which is more than just friendship. Of course, her time away from the Shadowhunters' world doesn't last very long since Valentine starts stirring things up again. He plans to build an army of demons to go against the Shadowhunters.

That's the little summary I've come up with, but when it comes to details, I honestly don't know where to even start. There is just so much going on this book: so much action and so many emotions floating around. There's the Jace-Clary-Simon love triangle, and then there is Isabelle and the fairy, and then Alec and Magnus, Luke and Clary's mother.... There's them dealing with the Inquisitor, vampires being born, fairies throwing feasts and Shadowhunters fighting off demons. There was also quite a bit of death and almost-death, which were rather emotional to read about where you might want to stop for a second and take a breath.

In this book, we meet Alec and Isabelle's parents, and their little brother Max. We get to know even more about the Shadowhunters' world, see more of the vampires, the wolves and fairies. And then, of course, there's the unimaginable number of different kinds of demons. We also find out what's different and special about Clary and Jace and their abilities. Even though we do see quite a bit of that, it's still not too clear what is going on and how they became that way in the first place, and I cannot wait to find out more.

Remember my comment about Magnus Bane from my review of the first book? Well, I'm still behind that, and I think he might be my favorite character. He's loving and caring and witty, and he has the best come-backs ever. The kids I do like just the same, yet I'm still not too sure about Luke. It's not that I don't like him, but I guess he's too much of an adult for my taste. He really does carry all the weight of his past on his shoulders, and it's very much visible in all his actions.

All in all, it was amazing to see how all the main characters stick together and the sacrifices they make for another, and, of course, for the greater good. And remember how I said these books kinda reminded me of Harry Potter even though they didn't have anything to do with each other? Well, there's a reference to Harry Potter in City of Ashes. It's very brief, but it did put a big grin on my face. It's werewolves at the diner who would win if Dumbledore and Magnus Bane fought, and one of them goes, "Dumbledore would totally win. He has the badass Killing Curse." At the risk of geeking out too much on this, I'm leaving it at that.

In most of the YA books I've read, there's usually at least one teen who'll really piss me off. But with The Mortal Instruments, it hasn't happened. They do act mature when they have to, and other than that they're just regular kids. Clare definitely gets bonus points for not making them way too over dramatic or whiny.

Kemikler Şehri, Ölümcül Oyuncaklar serisinin ilk kitabı. Üç kitabın da bir arada olduğu set uzun zamandır wish listimdeydi ve onları niye okumak istediğimi şu an açıkçası hatırlamıyorum bile. Sanırım sadece meraktı nedeni...

Ana kahramanımız Clary annesiyle birlikte Brooklyn’de yaşayan 15 yaşında bir kız. Uzun lafın kısası, Clary görmemesi gereken birşeyi bir gece kulübünde gördüğü zaman dünyası tamamen değişiyor. Olaylar geliştikçe de Gölgeavcılarından biri olduğunu anlıyor.

Olaylara çok fazla girmeyeğim çünkü cidden spoiler vermekten korkuyorum. Olayların akışı ve hızlı bir şekilde ilerlemeleri çok hoşuma gitti. Hikayenin anlatılış şekli ilginizi çekiyor ve devamında ne olduğunu öğrenmek için can atıyorsunuz. Ben şahsen kitabın ikinci yarısını ertesi gün işte uyuklamayı göze alarak bir gece bitirdim ve değdi doğrusu.


Biraz karakterlerden bahsedelim… Kibirli, alaycı, sürekli tehlike arayan Gölgeavcısı Jace’e kesinlikle aşık olacaksınız. Çocuğu tokatlamak istediğiniz zamanlar da olacak ancak o anlarda bile o kadar karşı konulmaz olacak ki tokadı mokadı unutacaksınız. Sonra bir de Jace’in üvey erkek kardeşi ve kız kardeşi var: Alec ve Isabelle. Alec başından beri acayip şirin bir karakter. Kendine güveni pek yok ancak sevdiği insanları ölümüne koruyor. Isabelle ise dıştan bakınca cadı bir kız ancak ileride aslında aynı erkek kardeşi Alec gibi olduğunu anlıyorsunuz. Karakterlerin kitabın sonuna doğru değişimini izlemek çok keyifli. Hem yaşadıkları olaylarla hem de birbirlerinden etkilenerek olgunlaşıyorlar.

Bir de tabii ki ana karakterimiz Clary ve onun en yakın arkadaşı Simon var. Clary söz konusu olduğunda sonunda yaşına gore hareket eden, gereksiz yere mızmızlayan veya birdenbire imam power’a kavuşmayan bir karakterle karşılaşmak çok güzeldi. Öğrendiklerini 15 yaşındaki normal bir kızdan beklenecek şekilde karşılıyor ve olgunlaşsa da hala 15 yaşında bir kız olduğu belli oluyor. Simon ise mutlaka hayatınızda olmasını isteyeceğiniz sevecen, evhamlanan ve eğlenceli, dünya tatlısı bir karakter.

Kitaptaki yetişkinlerden bahsetmeyeceğim çünkü bahsedersem spoiler vermemek imkansız olacak. Sadece şunu söyleyeceğim: ‘Magnus Bane’ ismini hatırlayın. Kitabı okuduktan sona bana teşekkür edeceksiniz.


Hikayenin üçüncü şahıs ağzından anlatılması kitabın en beğendiğim özelliklerinden biriydi. Son zamanlarda bu tarz kitaplar hep birinci şahıs ağzından oluyor ve bazen yazarların okurları aptal yerine koyduğu hissine kapılıyorum. Bize karakterlerin hissettiği her şeyi ıncık mıncık anlatmak zorunda değiller. Olaylardan da o kadarını kendimiz çıkarabiliyoruz çok şükür! Buna ek olarak Clare’in farklı doğa üstü karakterleri bir araya getirmesi de çok hoşuma gitti. Kitapta herkese göre bir doğa üstü varlık var: Gölgeavcıları, periler, büyücüler, vampirler, kurtadamlar, iblisler, cadılar… İkinci kitaba da çoktan başladığım için rahatlıkla söyleyebilirim ki bu saydığım farklı karakterler ileride ön plana çıkmaya da başlıyor.

Kitabın Harry Potter’ı andırdığını söylemeden de geçemeyeceğim. Birbirlerine benzer yanları yok aslında ancak Kemikler Şehri de Harry Potter kitapları gibi iyi bir şekilde kurgulanmış ve herşey geride yatan tarihi bilgilere kadar düşünülmüş. Olaylar ise bizim yaşadığımız zamanlarda geçiyor. Bence bu daha heyecanlı bir durum çünkü bence New York’ta metroya binen doğa üstü varlıklar son model araba kullanan vampirlerden çok daha ilginç.

Book Review: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

 City of Bones is the first book of The Mortal Instruments series. The 3-book set has been on my wish list forever, and when I think back to why I put them there in the first place, I'm drawing blanks. I have a feeling it was pure curiosity, and either way I'm glad I finally got to start them.

Clary, the protagonist, is a 15-year-old girl who lives with her mother in Brooklyn. Long story short, her world changes completely when one night at a club she sees something she's not supposed to see. As things start to unfold, she finds she's a part of the Shadowhunters world, always had been.

I'm not going to get too much into the plot because I'm afraid I can't not give spoilers. I really loved how everything was set up and fast-paced. The way the story is set up keeps you connected and leaves you wanting more. So much so that I ended up finishing almost half the book in one night, risking being completely exhausted and sleepy at work the next day. And guess what? It was sooo worth it.

So let's move onto the characters... You're so going to fall for the arrogant, sarcastic, danger-searching Shadowhunter Jace. There will be times when you want to slap him across the face, but even then he's going to be so irresistible that you won't be able to do it if you could. Then there are Jace's adoptive brother and sister: Alec and Isabelle. Alec is completely adorable right from the beginning. He's not too confident for himself, but he's very protective of the ones who are important to him. Isabelle seems quite mean on the outside, but she's just the same as her brother. It's great to see how they evolve toward the end of the book, effected by both one another and the situations they find themselves in.

Then there are, of course, Clary, and her best friend Simon. When it comes to Clary, I was glad to finally see a female character who acts her age and doesn't get all too-dramatic or whiny or too brave like most main characters in other books tend to do. She takes the news in like a regular 15-year old would, and even though she does evolve, she's still a 15-year old girl. And Simon... Oh, Simon. He's literally one of those loving, caring, worrying, fun-to-be-with guys you'd always want around.

I'm not going to get into the adults in the book because they're not all too relevant at this point-- wait, some of them are, but then I'd be spoiling it, so no! I do want to say though that remember the name 'Magnus Bane.' When you do read the book, do come back and let me know you thought he was adorable in a 'how's this possible?' kind of way.

This book got bonus points from me right from the beginning just because it was set in New York. There's a lot more to it than that, though. First of all, THANK YOU Cassandra Clare for writing in the third person. Lately I've been sick of first person narrations because it felt to me like authors are forgetting that their readers aren't stupid. You don't have to TELL us how a character is feeling the entire time; I'm sure all of us can figure it out all by our little selves. In addition to this, I love how she brought together all kinds of paranormal: you will find in this book Shadowhunters, fairies, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, demons, witches... There's something there for everyone, really. And now that I've already started the second book, I'm finding out that more and more different creatures are coming into focus.

I can't go without saying that this book reminded me a lot of the Harry Potter books, which I love. Not in the sense that they have anything to do with each other, really, but the way the story was formed with the strong characters and the ancient, made-up history. But it takes place in our timeline, like it could really be happening right now, which makes it even more interesting because supernatural beings riding the subway is way more whoa-worthy than vampires driving expensive cars, no?
