Bir Lord Archer'ım olsun, isterse taştan olsun!

 

Çok yakın arkadaşım Kathy, 'Paranormal Romance' (PNR) türünün uzmanıdır. Şimdiye kadar bu türde okuduğum ve sevdiğim tüm kitaplardan sorumludur. Son zamanlarda bu taraklarda bezi olmayan Hannah isimli arkadaşımızı da PNR delisi yaptı. Darkest London serisinin ilk kitabı Firelight'ı okumam gerektiğini Hannah'dan duyunca da düşünmeden başladım kitaba. İyi yaptım çünkü gerçekten türünün diğer örneklerine çok benzemeyen, her yönden insanı merakta bırakan ve heyecanlandıran bir hikayesi var. Kötü yaptım çünkü serinin ikinci kitabı bu yıl Ağustos ayında çıkacak. Tamam, Ağustos çok uzak değil ama onu da okuyup bitirince ne yapacağız?

Bunları düşünüp üzülmeye fırsatımız olmadan gelelim kitabın konusuna. Miranda Ellis ve Lord Benjamin Archer'ın hikayesi 1881 yılının Londrasında geçiyor. Kitabı okumadan önce edindiğim bilgi bununla sınırlıydı ve bu bana yetti şahsen. PNR türü kitapların çoğunda olduğu gibi erkek kahramanımızın da, kadın kahramanımızın da doğaüstü güçleri var. Miranda'nınki ateşle ilgili, kitabın kapağından da anlayacağınız gibi. Lord Archer'ınkini ise söylemeyeceğim çünkü okurken merak etmenin tadı başka oluyor. Ki emin olun uzun süre merakta kalacaksınız.

Kitapta her türden bol bol aksiyon var. En sevdiğim yanı ise zorluklarla savaşma kısımlarının ayrıntılı bir şekilde anlatılmasıydı. Çoğu kitaptaki gibi 'e bu de oldu da bitti, hadi aşık olduk biz' tarzında gelişmiyor olaylar. Aralara serpiştirilmiş küçük ipuçları olsa da kitabın büyük sırrı sonuna kadar büyüsünü koruyor. Ve sonuçta aklınıza gelmeyecek bir yerden olaylar çözümleniyor. 

Ben özellikle bu tür kitapları okurken kafamda istediğim adamı canlandırıyorum ana karakter olarak (son zamanlarda genellikle Charlie Hunnam oluyor bu, olur da merak eden varsa). Özellikle İtalyan erkeklerini beğenenler Lord Archer'ı her şeyiyle beğenecekler bence. Kendisi sırrını saklamak için uzun bir süre maskeyle dolaşıyor ve insan 'ne var o maskenin altında göster artık tak etti canıma!' diye isyan ederken buluyor kendini.

Bu türe aşina olmayanlar ne düşünürler bilemem ancak PNR seviyorsanız, bu kitabı da severek okuyacağınıza inanıyorum. Ancak benim gibi yapmayın; zamanınız bolken bir seferde okuyun yoksa 'bundan sonra ne olacak?' diye düşünüp duruyorsunuz.

Serinin bir sonraki kitabı Moonglow olacak. Miranda ve Lord Archer'ın hikayesi Firelight'la birlikte sonlandığı için Moonglow'da farklı ana karakterler olacak. Ancak bu yeni karakterler de Miranda ve Archer'a yakın olduğu için onları da arada görebileceğimizi düşünüyorum.

Bu kitapların Türkçe çevirileri yapılır mı onu da merak ediyorum.

 

Book Review: Firelight (Darkest London #1) by Kristen Callihan

One of my best friends Kathy is the expert on the Paranormal Romance (PNR) genre. She is responsible for all the PNR books I've read and loved so far. Lately, both our close friend Hannah, who is not particularly a fan of the genre, got into it thanks again to Kathy. Hannah was the one who suggested I read Kristen Callihan's Firelight, the first book of the Darkest London series, and I just started it without giving it a second thought. 

The no-second-thought part was good because I got to read a story that differs from those of its genre, which left me excited and curious chapter after chapter. Yet it was a bad idea because the second book in the series, Moonglow, will be published later this year in August. I know, August isn't that far away, but what do we do when we read that too and there's no more?

Without getting all depressed about that thought, I shall talk about the book. The story of Miranda Ellis and Lord Benjamin Archer takes place in 1881 in London. This is all I knew before reading the book, and for me it was more than enough. And it did not disappoint. Just like it is in most of the PNR books, both our male and female characters have -deadly!- supernatural abilities of their own. Miranda's has to do with fire, as you can tell from the cover of the book. I will not reveal what's going on with Lord Archer because part of the thrill in reading the book is finding out what the hell's up with him. And I can assure you it'll take you an exciting ride to find out about it.

This book has lots of action of all kinds. I liked that the parts about the characters overcoming obstacles were told in detail. The story doesn't progress the way they usually do, that 'killed the bad guy! let's jump our bones now!' kinda way. There are clues to what the story's leading to throughout the chapters, but I still found myself surprised at the end of the book.

I myself usually picture whomever I fancy as the leading male character while reading these books (for those of you who are wondering, it's been Charlie Hunnam for a while now). But I'm sure those of you who fancy Italian guys will have no problem falling for the description of Lord Archer. He walks around wearing a mask throughout most of the book, and it's both a literal and a metaphorical mask to hide his secret. And you'll definitely find yourself going, "take if off already!"

I don't know what those of you who're not fans of the genre would think about this book, but I'm sure those of you who are will love it. Don't do what I did though-- read it when you have the time to finish it, 'cos otherwise you find yourself going crazy, wondering what will happen next.

The second book in the series will be Moonglow, which will revolve around different characters. You'll meet them in Firelight, so they won't be strangers, but it's still kinda hard to let Miranda and Archer go. I do get the feeling that they might just show up though, even if briefly.

Bu kitabın Türkçesi yok henüz, ancak ismini çeviren ben olsaydım, 'Alev Işığı' diye çevirirdim. Sevmedim kendisini gerçi... Denedim hakkaten ama olmadı. Özetini ilk okuduğumda çok heyecanlanmıştım halbuki ve blog turuna ismimi yazdırmayı becerince de pek bir sevinmiştim. Sağlık olsun, ne diyelim. Konuya gelelim...

Ana karakterimiz Jacinda 'draki' diye geçen doğa üstü bir varlık. Bizim açımızdan değişik, evet, ama kendi draki grubunda da değişik kendisi çünkü o ateş nefesli. Hiç anlamamıştım bunun ne demek olduğunu kitabın başlarında, ancak sonradan öğreniyorsunuz ki, özellikle sinirlendiği ya da korktuğu zaman, nefes vererek karşısındaki insanı bir güzel yakabiliyor. Merak etmeyin, spoil etmedim, sürünmeyin diye baştan söyledim! Neyse... Kitap kızımızın bir arkadaşıyla asabi kız modunda macera aramasıyla başlıyor. Buluyorlar da tabii. Draki türünü avlayan insanlar buluyor bunları daha doğrusu. Kızımız kaçıyor, ailesiyle birlikte avlanan Will saklandığı yeri buluyor ama kimseye birşey söylemiyor. Jacinda sürekli onu düşünüp duruyor, bu çocuk niye böyle yaptı misali, sonra bir bakıyorsunuz annesi bunu ve kardeşini toplamış, haydi gidiyoruz diyor ve kaçıyorlar draki topluluğundan. Yeni gittikleri yerde de bir bakıyor Jacinda okulun ilk günü karşısında Will. E fiction işte...

Draki'ler dragon soyundan geliyorlar. Bu durum beni heyecanlandırmıştı ama kitapta aradığımı bulamadım bı açıdan. Kaçtıktan sonra genelde etraflarında hep insanlar vardı. Draki mraki ne gezer! Bir sürü çeşidi var diyor yazar, ama iki cümle birşey söyleyip geçiyor, merakta bırakıyor insanı. Jacinda da mıymıy, sürekli şikayet eden, bir onu bir bunu isteyen bir karakter olunca da okuması zor oluyor. Hikaye yavaş ilerliyor, insanın sabrını zorluyor.

Annesi ile draki olmayı becerememiş kızkardeşi de ayrı bir olay. Annesi bunları kaçırdığında 'Jacindacığım, öldür drakini' diyor, nasıl bir anneyse artık. Bu arada, hikayeyi Jacinda'nın ağzından dinlediğimizi söylemeyi unuttum. O da bir ayrı gıcıklık zaten. Bir diyor ki 'ben drakiyim' bir diyorki 'içimdeki draki.' E bir karar ver kızım, draki misin yoksa o senin içinde yaşayan birşey mi? Haksız mıyım ama?

Bu yorumu yazarken bile sıkıldım valla. Kitabın iyi yanı türünün diğer örneklerine göre konunun biraz daha değişik olması. Ve bir akşamda okunuveriyor çabucak. 'Avcı avına vurulmuş işte, daha ne isterim!' diyorsanız okuyun, sevin, kitaplığa yerleştirin.

This book did not work for me. I wanted to like it, I really did, but it didn't happen. Our main character, Jacinda, is a draki, and she's a fire-breather, which makes her special among her pride. One day, when she's out with her friend in riot-girl mode, they run into hunters, and the one who finds her, Will, doesn't turn her in. She cannot stop thinking about him, and when her mother moves her and her non-draki sister away from the pride, she starts school only to find Will there.

I really liked the promise of the story, if not the story itself. The whole idea of draki, descendant from dragons, was very, very exciting. Jacinda is special because fire-breathers are thought to be extinct. There are also different kinds of draki, which I would have loved to explore more, but they were only mentioned between the lines. Anyway... Even though she's special and everyone values her for what she is, Jacinda is a weak character. She was trying to be free and independent, but most of the time I thought she was way too scared to actually go ahead and do it. Considering her age, her confusion about everything make sense, like the way she changes her mind about Will like a thousand times... But I wasn't a fan of it going on for more than 200-something pages. Maybe it's just me, but I seriously thought the story moved very slow with not much happening.

Her mother and sister were a different story. Her mother let her draki die a long time ago, and her sister never descended. So what the mother does is run away from the pride and force Jacinda to let her draki die. Yes, we know the pride only wants her for being a fire-breather and pretty much wants to use her for a baby-making machine, but forcing your daughter to deny what she is didn't sit well with me. Then again, Jacinda isn't sure either whether it would be good to hold onto what she is or sacrifice that side of her for her mother and sister.

The other thing I didn't get is... Is she a draki, or is draki a part of her? She keeps referring to her state as "my draki," but then sometimes she'll say "I'm draki." I thought she was a draki able to appear on human form, but sometimes I felt like she felt more like a human than a draki. She's never really sure whether she wants to let her draki die like her mother wants her to, but then when she meets Will, that side of her becomes hard to control. She knows he's a hunter, but he also didn't turn her in, so even if she wanted to, she couldn't stop herself from being around him. At one point, we even find out that Will really does remember her from the first time he saw her. He mentions something like there's something that drives him to the draki, and that makes him a good hunter. Of course, though, we never find out what that really is, which was disappointing.

I can't end this by complaining about the the references to Jacinda's skin. I understand her skin is a big part of the draki, but after the first few descriptions of her skin getting dry or hot or gold-colored, I kinda got tired of hearing about it. I wish this book was more draki and less human drama. The good thing about is though that I finished it one night. So if you're looking for a somewhat different, quick read, I'd say don't mind me too much and give it a shot.

EDIT: The lovely Leanna at Daisy Chain Book Reviews told me that we DO after all find out why Will's drawn to draki. For some reason, I totally missed out on that.
