Book Review: Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

11.27.2010

Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out....

Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.

A fun, fast, funny, and wonderfully intriguing blend of vampire and mystery that's hard to put down, and should not be missed. (Susan Sizemore)

Praise for Charlaine Harris:

Harris writes neatly and with assurance. (New York Times Book Review)

An author of rare talents. (Publishers Weekly)

I've read some irritating vampire stories in my time, and I must admit this doesn't even come near them. Except for one thing: Sookie Stackhouse.

This is my second time reading this first book of the series. When I first read it, the show hadn't even come out yet. I decided I did not want to read more because Sookie really irritated me. Second time around, she's still more irritating than ever, but with one of my best friends' assurance that the books get better, I went ahead and already started the second. But to stay on point....

I "kind of" understand how Sookie can be so immature even though she's 25. Because of her "disability, or gift, whatever you want to call it," she hasn't had many experiences. What I don't understand is how she falls in love pretty much right away and feels all confident and on top of the world all of a sudden. She's even kinda snobbish, too. I felt like she looks down on people, and I certainly do not like that. Also, I feel like she LOVED the fact that she was a weirdo right from the beginning, even though she wanted us to think she was feeling bad about it. Maybe it's her desperate need for approval, I'm not sure, but a lot of times I found myself wanting to punch some sense into her face.

The other characters are way more interesting, especially Jason, Eric (!), Lafayette, Arlene and Sam. I really, really like Sam. I hope we get to see lot more of them in the following books-- well, having started the second book, I know we won't see one if them, but I'm not giving away who just in case.

The plot is rather exciting, so I don't have anything negative to say for that. I don't know anything about Louisiana or New Orleans, so I can't comment on that either. I guess my biggest problem with the book is that I feel like I have Sookie's disability, but I can't seem to put up my guard and shut her up.

-The New York Times Kitap Eki

'Nadir rastlanan yeteneklere sahip bir yazar.'
-Publishers Weekly

Book Blogger Hop is a fun event hosted by Crazy-for-Books every Friday.

This week's question: "What is your favorite book cover?"

I hardly ever pay attention to book covers, and for me, less pictures is better. But the only one that sticks out in my head ever since I saw & read it is this cover of "This Book Will Save Your Life" by A.M. Homes:

Book Review: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

11.23.2010

Mockingjay (Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne Collins

Young Katniss Everdeen has survived the dreaded Hunger Games not once, but twice, but even now she can find no relief. In fact, the dangers seem to be escalating: President Snow has declared an all-out war on Kattnis, her family, her friends, and all the oppressed people of District 12. The thrill-packed final installment of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy will keep young hearts pounding.

My heart was pounding, alright, but that was during the first two books. In the beginning of this one, I was rather amazed at the kind of subjects being touched upon, but later I just felt like the characters were becoming less and less visible. Yes, the events are important, but to me characters are the most important part of the story. Especially in a series, it's amazing to see how they change, evolve, etc., but that didn't happen in this book.

The war and violence seemed to just swallow the characters. I feel like these two subjects, unfortunately, aren't strangers to our generation. But when the characters weren't really there, it pretty much felt like watching the news on the television screen. Many times it made me wanna scream, "once more, please, WITH FEELING!" But nope.

I also didn't like how Gale was nowhere to be found in the ending. I'm pretty sure a lot of the readers who made a connection with him were upset about that, too.

I do like these series in general. While the second book is my favorite, I thought the first one was very good, too. I might just pretend this last one never happened.

I've also finished this book on the plane to NYC, but I'm not going to review it. Let's just say it was nothing more than what I expected.

In My Mailbox (#5)

11.21.2010

In my Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren in which bloggers share the books they have received each week.
I haven't been around much, no? Anyway... I just wanted to show you guys how I lose myself while I'm book-shopping. I got all of these last week, when I was in the US. And I found the first 3 Kathy Reichs books at Heathrow airport. So they are:

  • Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris: I'd read the first one and didn't like it, but one of my best friends assured me I'd love them as I moved on. So I'm giving them a second shot. I got all of them except for the newest one.
  • The October Country by Ray Bradbury: I forget where I saw this one, but who doesn't like horror stories?
  • The Road by Cormac McCarthy: This one also came highly recommended from a best friend.
  • The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare: Always wanted to read these. I had no idea they were YA though, but we'll see.
  • Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare: This is the first book of her other series.
  • Deja Dead, Deadly Decisions & Death Du Jour by Kathy Reichs: I love the show Bones and really wanted to read the books. I got lucky with this box set of the first 3 books.
  • The Black Dagger Brotherhood: An Insider's Guide: This is a gift from my friend who got me addicted to the series. She said that it has the old language and a bunch of different things in it, which gets me very excited.
