Book Review: ROOM by Emma Donoghue

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son's bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, ROOM is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.

This was the second book we read in my book club, Ex Libris.

Room by Emma Donoghue tells the story of Jack and her mother, who are literally stuck living inside a room and aren't allowed to go or even look outside. Old Nick, as the man who kidnapped the mother is called, brings them food and things-- on his own terms. Jack was born in the Room, which has no windows except for a skylight that doesn't show much, and all he knows of the world is what his mother tells him. He watches TV, yes, but for the longest time he thinks there are people "in" the TV and that nothing he sees on there is real.

I was rather amazed by how Donoghue makes a 5-year-old boy tell the story without me wanting to gauge my eyes out. At the same time, he's just like any other kid would be. He wants to play, he wants his mother to pay attention to him at all times, he doesn't want her or himself hurt, he likes to stick to his schedule. Jack and "Ma" have their own schedule in the Room, which, like I've said, Jack was born into. So when they're finally rescued, both him and his Ma have a very hard time, both for very different reasons.

I didn't research this well, because I don't care, but I also can't help but mentioning seeing some people who give the book crap for being on a true story, mainly the Fritzl case. And the reason I mention this is because for me it's another aspect of the book that makes it fascinating. Are any of us unfamiliar with these kind of events taking place in real life? How many times have we seen such a thing on the news and cursed the hell out of those evil people, hardly comprehending such a thing would happen? My answer is, more times than I'd like to remember, and I'm pretty sure there were those that were never found or made it to the news. 

Yet I found myself not being able to stop reading just to see what was going to happen. Yes, you take a deep breath once they're saved and go, "phew!" but as it's way more obvious for Jack than it is for Ma, being saved doesn't mean they get to just keep on living their lives. Seeing how the sun, the breeze, the grass, the rain, the stairs and everything are all new to Jack made me realize how much we take for granted just because they're always there. 

I think my favorite part was observing Jack while he himself observed the Outside. He makes quite a few points that I wouldn't even think of. One of the questions he has, for example, is why do people say "careful" after you've yourself? Really, why not before you get hurt? And then, when they drive by a park after Jack's been to a different one, he thinks everything's in the wrong place and that something's just very wrong, until someone tells him that's a different park. His reaction, which I loved, is "Lots of the world seems to be a repeat." You're right, Jack, you're so right.

On kind of a last note, and this might be a spoiler if you're a nerd like I am, the version of the book I have has the cover you see on the right. I kinda wish I waited to get the other one I posted on top because after reading the book, I think the designers were very clever about it. When Jack and Ma are in the clinic, Dr. Clay gives Jack crayons so he can draw for him the Room. Jack says there are 120 different colors in the box, but he picks five; blue, green, orange, red and brown because that's all he had in the Room. See; orange, red, green and blue on the cover, in a child's handwriting. Am I getting way too excited about this? Well, shit happens.

Kitap Yorumu: J.R. Ward'un Türkçe'ye bir türlü çevrilmeyen kitaplarından...

Bunun da Türkçesi yok maalesef arkadaşlar. Bunları niye çevirmiyorlar anlamıyorum. Koca koca insanlar bile (bakınız ben) çoluk çocuk için yazılan vampir hikayelerini okuyor, bunları niye okumasınlar? İşin içine seks meks giriyor, olaylar azcık abarıyor diye olabilir gerçi ama bana mı düşmüş nedenini bulmak?

Bu kitap, J.R. Ward'un Black Dagger Brotherhood serisinin bir nevi perde arkası. Ward ablamız kitapları nasıl yazdığını, nasıl sattığını, vampir aşklarımızın kafasında neler yaptığını anlatmış gayet güzel. Kitaba başladığımda ne beklediğimi de pek bilmiyordum açıkçası. Bu kitapları başıma saran (iyi ki sarmış gerçi!) arkadaşım Kathy kitaplarda sözü geçen eski dili falan öğreneceğimi söylemişti. Başka birşeyler de söylemiştir kesin ama benim aklımda bir tek o kalmış. O yüzden çok heyecanlandım tabii ama bilmiyordum ki koskoca kitabın tek bir sayfası için heyecan yapmış olduğumu...

Öncelikle Ward'un yazı sürecini okumak şahaneydi benim açımdan. Yazarlar genellikle 'geliyor, yazıyorum' tarzı bir havayla anlatırlar bu süreci. Tamam, gelmeden yazılmaz ama 'hiç mi zorlanmıyorsun be adam!' diye bir omuzlarından tutup sallayası geliyor insanın. Ward da geliyor yazıyorum diyor ama aynı zamanda zorluk çektiği karakterleri, bölüm ve olay sıralamalarında çektiği zorlukları da ayrıntılı bir şekilde anlatıyor. Ve benim için en önemli olan tarafı, zorluk çektiği zamanlar olduğunu idare ediyor. Resmen kadına daha çok saygı duydum ve daha bir sevdim kendisini.

Beni en heyecanlandıran bölümlerden birisi bu yazım süreci olsa da kitap aslında Bella, Zsadist ve Bella'nın yayımlanmamış bir hikayesiyle başlıyor. Bu hikaye hem çok şirin, hem de çok depresifti. Zsadist'in kitabı üçüncü kitap ve o kitabı cidden içiniz acıya acıya okuyorsunuz. Adamın başından neler neler geçmiş, psikopat ve insanlardan kopuk olması kadar normal birşey yok yani. O nedenle yeni doğmuş bebeğiyle ilk başlarda ilişki kuramaması ancak sonrasında duruma alışmasını izlemek bayağı ilginçti.

Her bölüme teker teker yorum yapmayacağım çünkü sabaha kadar kalırız burada. O nedenle diğer favori bölümlerimden bahsedeyim... Bir Kicks and Giggles bir de BDB forumlarından alınan kısımlar şahaneydi. Özellikle brother'ların forumlara girip de saçma sapan muhabbetlere başlamalarını okurken kendi kendime güldüm durdum. Artık hergün aynı otobüse denk geldiğim insanlar kesin deli sanıyor beni ama değer valla. Kitabını okuduğumdan beri (merak ediyorsanız ikinci kitap) Rhage'e aşıktım zaten ve bu board olayında da o muzur karakteri direk ortalığa dökülüyor. Özellikle V'yle didiştiği kısımları okurken katıla katıla güldüm manyaklar gibi. İyi de geldi, ne yalan söyleyeyim.

Bu kamera arkası tarzı kitap Phury'ninli olan altıncı kitabın peşinden yayımlanmış. Ben ta sekizinci kitabı da bitirdikten sonra okudum. Doğrusunu isterseniz bir şey farkettiğini pek sanmıyorum. Tek söyleyebileceğim kitap şu an çıkmış olsaydı Rehv ve John Matthew hakkında da bir kaç birşey bulunurdu içinde, iyi olurdu. Artık bir altı kitap daha sonra yazsın bir tane daha! Bu seriyi mutlaka bulun, alın, okuyun.

In J.R. Ward's The Black Dagger Brotherhood: An Insider's Guide, you really do see the inside of EVERYTHING: from how Ward created the characters to her writing and publishing process and to what the brothers and shellans are up to outside of the books. When I first started the book, I wasn't too sure of what to expect, honestly. All I remembered was my friend Kathy -- she's the one who got me obsessed with the series-- telling me we got to see the Old Language. For one reason or the other, that was the part I was most excited about.

Boy, was I keeping my expectations low! First of all, I absolutely loved hearing about Ward's process. No offense to any of them, but authors tend to not be able to explain HOW they write, and they tend to end up giving vague answers like "I just put what's in my head on paper." Ward does say the same thing as well, but she goes on further: she talks about how she struggled with certain characters and story lines and how shit actually got "hard" at certain points. To me, that makes her real and honest, and I appreciate it.

I'm going out of order here, actually, since the book starts with a story of Zsadist, Bella and Nalla. I must say, Father Mine was absolutely heart-breaking and lovely at the same time. Knowing Zsadist's past, you can imagine him having problems with having a 'young,' but seeing how he evolves and comes in terms with it was amazing.

I think I shouldn't go into every single section, 'cos this could go on forever! So, my other favorite parts were J.R. interviewing the brothers, Kick and Giggles, Slices of Life from the Board. Especially the brothers going on the forums and starting shit up got me laughing out loud and lead to people on the bus staring at me like I'm some sort of freak, but I couldn't care less. I've been head-over-heels in love with Rhage, a.k.a. Hollywood, ever since I've read his book, and that has not changed. Therefore, the shenanigans he started up got me giggling like a school girl. And him and V going at it to get back at one another was just flat out hilarious.

The Insider's Guide came out after the sixth book, Lover Enshrined, which is Phury's book. I didn't read it till after Lover Mine, though, and I don't think it makes that much of a difference except it would be pretty cool to get some insight on Rehv and john Matthew as well, which came after the Guide was published. All in all, if you love the BDB series, you're definitely going to enjoy the extras in this one.

Tuhaf ve seksi garson kız Sookie Stackhouse'a kapılmamanın yolu yok. Bizi de al Sookie! Bizi de!

İnsan her gün yol kenarında koşan yarı çıplak bir adamla karşılaşmaz ki!

Sookie Stackhouse da gaza basıp yoluna devam edemedi tabii. Zavallı çıplak adam şuurunu yitirmişti, kim olduğunu bilmiyordu. Oysa Sookie onu gayet iyi tanıyordu. Vampir Eric'ten başkası değildi. Ama çok daha iyi kalpli, daha nazik bir Eric. 

Ve daha ürkek. E, hakkı var, zira geçmişini silen artık her kimse, şimdi de canını almanın peşindeydi. Eric'in belalısını araştıran Sookie, kendini aniden cadılar, vampirler ve kurtadamlar arasında patlak veren tüyler ürpertici bir savaşın ortasında bulacaktı. Ama asıl tehlikedeki Sookie'nin kalbiydi. Hımmm! 

Şeyyy, çünkü bu yeni Eric'e karşı koyabilmek öyle her babayiğidin harcı değildi.

Vampir Avcısı Anita'yı okumaya sıra gelmedi henüz ama bu kitapların Buffy the Vampire Slayer'la karşılaştırılması sinir ediyor beni. Hem de onun mizah gücüyle karşılaştırıyorlar bir de utanmadan! Ayıp, ayıp. Tamam kendi çapımda sevdim bu kitapları ama Charlaine Harris Joss Whedon kadar mizah gücü olsa daha ne ister! Neyse... Kitaba gelelim.

Öncelikle herkese bu kitapları Eric Northman üzerinden değerlendirdiğimi hatırlatmam gerekiyor. Sookie ve Bill ciddi sinirimi bozuyorlar çünkü, ikisini de tokatlayasım geliyor. 4'üncü kitap olan Cadı Ölüsü ise 2 nedenden dolayı şahane: 1) Bill gitti, yok meydanda. 2) Eric her dakka meydanda! Sookie Eric'i yarı çıplak yolun ortasında koşarken buluyor bir gece (o an geçirilmesi muhtemel olan kalp krizini düşünebiliyor musunuz?!). Vampircağız hafızasını kaybetmiş, kim olduğunu falan hatırlamıyor. Sonra öğreniyoruz ki bir grup cadı vampirlerin peşinde ve bu hafıza kaybı onların işi. Sonra da Jason kayboluyor ki o da kötü oldu çünkü kitabın eğlencesini eksiltiyor resmen yokluğu.

Eric'in hafıza kaybı olayı ilk başlarda süperdi. Süt bulmuş kedi gibiydi kendisi anca sonradan farkına vardım ki biz onun 'bad boy' havalarını sevmişiz. Böyle dizde yatıp miyavlayan halleri bir yere kadar çekiliyor yani. Sookie'yi de neden istediğini hala anlayabilmiş değilim ve anlayamayacağım da herhalde. Genellikle ana karakterlere gıcık da olsam bi şekilde bir şekilde yakınlık duyabiliyorum onlara, ya da en azından dertlerini az buçuk anlayabiliyorum. Ama Sookie'yle olmadı. Çok dramatik geliyor bana, sahte geliyor. Hele ki şu günün kelimesi takvimi yok mu, sürekli oradan kelimeler kullanmaya uğraşmıyor mu? Deliriyorum resmen. Elimde olsa yırtıp atacağım o takvimi!

Bu kitapta Sam gibi başka 'shifter'larla da tanışıyoruz. Cadı olayını öğrenince de çok heyecanlandım ama hevesim kursağımda kaldı. Çok yavaş ilerledi kitap, çooook. Sonradan ne olacağını da hala merak ediyorum yalnız, bu da iyi bir şey bence. Serinin devamında neler olur bilemem ama şu anda bu kitaplarla hep bir 'love&hate' ilişkim olacakmış gibi duruyor.

I did, thanks to a friend, yet it was annoying since it made everything Russian. I have nothing against Russians, mind you, but all I know to say is "good afternoon" in Russian, and I can't even type that.

Turkey Bans Blogger for Hosting Turkish Soccer League Videos

A Turkish court in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir has banned Google’s popular blogging platform Blogger in response to a complaint by satellite television provider Digiturk, that Blogger users had illegally posted videos of Turkish Super League matches that are owned by Digiturk’s Lig TV.

The ban, widely viewed as disproportionate, has prompted outrage among Turkey’s 600,000 bloggers and 18 million Internet users and focused attention on Turkey’s restrictive Internet laws. Millions of Turkish bloggers and blog readers have been unable to access Blogger since the ban was imposed on March 1. Critics of the ban have created groups on Facebook and Twitter that are rapidly gaining popularity. They assert that the ban amounts to censorship.

“This is a disproportionate response by the court and undoubtedly has a huge impact on all law-abiding citizens,” cyber-rights activist and Bilgi University law professor Yaman Akdeniz told Turkey’s Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review. Akdeniz acknowledged that Digiturk had a legitimate concern but argues that banning a website did not provide a solution.

Turkish Media Association Secretary General Deniz Ergürel compared the ban to shutting down telephone services because two people used a phone to discuss committing a crime. “Even cursing, threatening or cheating over the phone is considered a crime, but this does not imply access to phones all over the country would be banned if there is a case against them,” Ergürel said.

In defense of its complaint, Digiturk said that its repeated warnings not use copyrighted material had been ignored. Digiturk said it had paid $321 million for the exclusive right to broadcast Super League matches. “Thus, we applied to court to ban these websites, and the court decided to ban access to them, after it was proved that although all legal procedures were conducted, the violations were not stopped,” Digiturk said in a statement.

Book Review: Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris

When cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse sees a naked man on the side of the road, she doesn't just drive on by. Turns out the poor thing hasn't a clue who he is, but Sookie does. It's Eric the vampire--but now he's a kinder, gentler Eric. And a scared Eric, because whoever took his memory now wants his life.

First of all, I'd like to remind everyone that I rate these book on Eric Northman's deliciousness and the story overall because if I take into account Sookie and Bill, it will not work. They annoy me to death. So, moving on... The 4th installment of the series, Dead to the World, was amazing because of 2 things: 1) Bill was gone. 2) Eric was around A LOT. Sookie finds Eric running around half naked on the side of the road, and he has amnesia. It turns out there are witches out to get vampires. And then, Jason disappears, which was sad 'cos he's always fun to have around...

Eric having amnesia was all cute and sweet at the beginning, but then I realized I like him because he's dangerous and has that "whatever" kinda careless attitude. Why he wants Sookie, I'll never know, and I'm okay with that. I usually manage to sympathize with the main characters, but so far that has not happened with Sookie. Yes, we all feel confident at times, and yes, we all we insecure sometimes, too, but I can't shake the feeling that all her highs and lows are way overdone. And she really needs to get rid of that god damn Word of the Day calendar. (She never does, does she? Go ahead, you can tell me; I'm already prepared for the worst)

The witches being around and the different kinds of shifters in addition to the wolves coming into the picture was rather exciting, but events themselves moved way too slowly for me. I still have a weird relationship with these books in the way that I don't hate them, I don't love them, but I don't regret reading them either. The plus side is that I am indeed curious about what will happen next, so we shall see.

P.S. Does Eric have chest hair or not? Or does it come and go?

Türkçe Yorum: 'Alev Işığı' (Firelight) - Sophie Jordan

Bu kitabın Türkçesi yok henüz, ancak ismini çeviren ben olsaydım, 'Alev Işığı' diye çevirirdim. Sevmedim kendisini gerçi... Denedim hakkaten ama olmadı. Özetini ilk okuduğumda çok heyecanlanmıştım halbuki ve blog turuna ismimi yazdırmayı becerince de pek bir sevinmiştim. Sağlık olsun, ne diyelim. Konuya gelelim...

Ana karakterimiz Jacinda 'draki' diye geçen doğa üstü bir varlık. Bizim açımızdan değişik, evet, ama kendi draki grubunda da değişik kendisi çünkü o ateş nefesli. Hiç anlamamıştım bunun ne demek olduğunu kitabın başlarında, ancak sonradan öğreniyorsunuz ki, özellikle sinirlendiği ya da korktuğu zaman, nefes vererek karşısındaki insanı bir güzel yakabiliyor. Merak etmeyin, spoil etmedim, sürünmeyin diye baştan söyledim! Neyse... Kitap kızımızın bir arkadaşıyla asabi kız modunda macera aramasıyla başlıyor. Buluyorlar da tabii. Draki türünü avlayan insanlar buluyor bunları daha doğrusu. Kızımız kaçıyor, ailesiyle birlikte avlanan Will saklandığı yeri buluyor ama kimseye birşey söylemiyor. Jacinda sürekli onu düşünüp duruyor, bu çocuk niye böyle yaptı misali, sonra bir bakıyorsunuz annesi bunu ve kardeşini toplamış, haydi gidiyoruz diyor ve kaçıyorlar draki topluluğundan. Yeni gittikleri yerde de bir bakıyor Jacinda okulun ilk günü karşısında Will. E fiction işte...

Draki'ler dragon soyundan geliyorlar. Bu durum beni heyecanlandırmıştı ama kitapta aradığımı bulamadım bı açıdan. Kaçtıktan sonra genelde etraflarında hep insanlar vardı. Draki mraki ne gezer! Bir sürü çeşidi var diyor yazar, ama iki cümle birşey söyleyip geçiyor, merakta bırakıyor insanı. Jacinda da mıymıy, sürekli şikayet eden, bir onu bir bunu isteyen bir karakter olunca da okuması zor oluyor. Hikaye yavaş ilerliyor, insanın sabrını zorluyor.

Annesi ile draki olmayı becerememiş kızkardeşi de ayrı bir olay. Annesi bunları kaçırdığında 'Jacindacığım, öldür drakini' diyor, nasıl bir anneyse artık. Bu arada, hikayeyi Jacinda'nın ağzından dinlediğimizi söylemeyi unuttum. O da bir ayrı gıcıklık zaten. Bir diyor ki 'ben drakiyim' bir diyorki 'içimdeki draki.' E bir karar ver kızım, draki misin yoksa o senin içinde yaşayan birşey mi? Haksız mıyım ama?

Bu yorumu yazarken bile sıkıldım valla. Kitabın iyi yanı türünün diğer örneklerine göre konunun biraz daha değişik olması. Ve bir akşamda okunuveriyor çabucak. 'Avcı avına vurulmuş işte, daha ne isterim!' diyorsanız okuyun, sevin, kitaplığa yerleştirin.
